making our way from the colosseum to the trevi fountain we stopped at the vittorio emanuele II monument in the heart of rome. it is situated with a chaotic traffic circle surrounding it. our first day in rome we actually were picked up at the train station by a very nice guy who drove us through rome to get to his bed&breakfast and we drove around this traffic circle and i thought to myself that it is unbelievable that no one gets killed, the cars just whip around each other and some people like our driver, do not even look when changing lanes(not that there really are any lanes). this majestic monument looms over the sea of vehicular chaos below. the monument is all white marble with a statue of the first king of italy on his horse. there are beautiful fountains on the sides and it offers great panoramic views of rome. like all the ancient sites in rome it is quite impressive.
